Congratulations on your pregnancy! There is nothing more exciting than becoming a new mom because your whole life is about to change in new and colorful ways. We always love to hear about pregnancy and new mom stories. New moms have a ton of questions, and we are always here to answer them. A lot of questions we get from new moms are about dental hygiene.
Their Diet
Whether you plan to breastfeed your newborn or bottle feed them, you will need to keep their mouth clean for the first year. You do not have to brush their teeth because newborns do not have teeth when they are born. You also do not have to brush their gums. All you have to do to keep their mouth clean is to wipe their gums with a damp washcloth.
Baby Teeth
Many new moms ask us at what age their newborns will get their teeth. The answer is that your baby will get their teeth when it is their time. Some babies begin to get their teeth at around four months old, while other babies do not have a single tooth before their first birthdays.
Once your baby begins to have their teeth erupt, you will need to schedule an appointment with our practice. Our dentists will want to see your child when their teeth begin to erupt or around their first birthday if they have no teeth by the time they turn one.
Teething Issues
New moms also worry that their babies will be in pain when their teeth begin to erupt. Like everything else with babies, each baby is different. Some babies experience very little pain during teething, while other babies experience moderate pain during teething. You can help their teething pain by giving them pain relievers, massaging their gums, and allowing them to gnaw on a frozen washcloth or a teething toy that you can freeze. There are even teethers you can put frozen fruit in!
