What Tannins Do That Stain the Teeth

What Tannins Do That Stain the TeethEveryone wants to have a bright white smile. However, this can be a challenge because of the foods or drinks that we consume on a regular basis. If you want to have and maintain a bright smile, you have to avoid some drinks and food or take some remedy immediately after consuming them. This is because they contain tannins which can stain the teeth.

What Tannins Do

Several drinks and foods have some organic compounds known as tannins, which are responsible for giving them their taste and color. Tannins promote staining because they attract proteins, sugars, carbohydrates, proteins, bacterial cell membranes, and enzymes in the mouth and cause them to stick on the enamel. This also promotes cavities and decay.

Tannins Rich Foods and Drinks

Acidic foods and drinks cause stains aggressively, and the acid also softens and erodes the enamel. They also create rough patches that stain very easily. Some of the aggressive staining items include alcoholic beverages such as red wine, cherries, and soy sauce, which are mainly high in chromogens when compared to other drinks. Other strainers are coffee, sports drinks, sodas, and more. Less aggressive staining items include herbal and herbal teas. Tannins react with chromogens to intensify the colors of the strainers, resulting in the discoloration of teeth.

How To Prevent Discoloration

While it is difficult to completely stop food and drinks with tannins from staining your teeth, there are several ways to reduce their effects on your teeth. One trick is to add cream or milk to your coffee and tea to weaken the tannins. You can also rinse your mouth immediately after taking tannins-rich foods or drinks. To ensure that your teeth are well cleaned, schedule regular dental appointments with our professionals after every six months.
